Abstract

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common infection in critically ill patients in hospital environment. VAP can appear within 48-72 hours after orotracheal intubation and is associated with a higher mortality rate. Objective of this article is to evaluate the importance of the dentist's role in the multidisciplinary team of Intensive Care Units in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation and oral hygiene protocols instituted for these individuals. This is an integrative literature review, and articles from last 10 years, related to the subject were searched in the PubMed, LILACS, Scielo and Google Schoolar data bases with the keywords: "mechanical ventilation", "nosocomial pneumonia", "intensive care unit", "oral hygiene" and "dentist-surgeon". Fourteen articles were selected from the searches and with the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Oral health is usually impaired after admission to the ICU, and accumulation of dental biofilm may cause serious infections such as nosocomial pneumonia, especially in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. It can be seen from the above that the presence of dental surgeon is necessary in hospital environment, to perform the proper oral care in these patients who are intubated in ICU, since the proper oral hygiene can reduce length of stay, besides reducing incidence of respiratory infections.
