Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the serum levels of vitamin D in patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, comparing them with those of healthy women, both with different Body Mass Indexes. This is a cross-sectional study, carried out at the Endocrine Gynecology and Human Reproduction outpatient clinic at the Getúlio Vargas Hospital (HGV) and at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Piauí (HU-UFPI), from December 2016 to December 2017. The sample consisted of 151 women, divided into four groups (G1 = normal weight PCOS group (n = 35); G2 = overweight/obesity PCOS group (n = 44); G3 = normal weight control (n = 32); and, G4=overweight/obesity control (n = 40). Data collection occurred through a structured form by the researchers, which was guided by a standard operating procedure, containing sociodemographic and clinical data. Women in the PCOS group ( normal weight and overweight/obese) had lower vitamin D levels than control women (non-obese and obese), noting that those without PCOS with normal weight had higher vitamin D levels than in all other groups, which allows to state that there was a relationship of between vitamin D levels and the presence of PCOS (p<0.02). Most women with PCOS have lower serum vitamin D levels, both those of normal weight and those with obesity and overweight compared to healthy women in similar conditions of weight changes and this difference is statistically significant.
