Bioethical aspects of brain death in the face of different religions

The term brain death was set during the 60s, with prominence, controversy and bioethics discussions due to cultural and religious differences. In this review, we discussed the bioethical aspects of the brain death determination of different religions. We searched through Pubmed for papers submitted using the descriptors “brain death”, “faith” and “bioethics”, that were published in the last 10 years. There were 36 papers, in which 13 met the inclusion criteria. The criteria for brain death determination was variable between countries and religions. The Catholic religion is more clear and has consensus over brain death acceptance, whereas other religions do not accept it or do not show any consensus on its interpretation and acceptance. The criteria for differences of brain death between countries and the acceptance between religions is complex. The four principles of bioethics (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice), should be understood and applied in each cultural and religious context.
