Photobiomodulation as auxiliary treatment of oral mucositis in patients submitted to antineoplastic treatments: integrative review

Abstract

Objective: To investigate e effectiveness of inserted laser therapy in the treatment and prevention of oral mucositis. Methodology: Is low-level laser therapy effective in the treatment of oral mucositis in cancer patients? An integrative qualitative review was performed. Using PubMed and SciELO databases, as keywords: low-level laser, laser therapy, American cancer society, cancer, neoplasia, head and neck neoplasms, mucositis and stomatitis. As a Boolean “AND” operator. As inclusion criteria, Portuguese and English in the period from 2017 to 2022. Those that did not address the mentioned topic are excluded. In order to discuss laser therapy as an auxiliary preventive and curative alternative for oral mucositis. Results: 22 articles were selected, where the levels of clinical evidences ay that photodynamic therapy is associated with regression, in addition to the appearance of oral mucositis lesions when compared to those who did not have access to photobiomodulation. Conclusion: Laser therapy can be an adjuvant treatment to antineoplastic therapies, in addition to tissue repair and consequent analgesia in the region, and can be used in different age groups and degrees of oral mucositis.
