Temporal trend of dengue cases in Brazil and its regions from 2001 to 2020

Abstract

Objective: To estimate the temporal trend of dengue cases in Brazil and its regions from 2001 to 2020. Methodology: This is an ecological time series study on dengue cases in Brazil and regions from 2001 to 2020. The data came from of the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), stratified according to age group, year and location. Standardized incidence rates (SPT) were calculated and used for trend analysis, performed using the Joinpoint model. Results: Brazil over the time series presented a total of 13,792,923 cases of dengue. The Southeast region predominated with the highest number of cases, representing 89.3% (n=12,321,732) of the total, followed by 22.7% (n=3,124,902) in the Northeast, 15.9% (n=2,192. 414) from the Midwest, 6% (n=826,873) from the North and 4.9% (n=679,122) from the South. The temporal trend in the South was of growth with a VPA of 19.6% per year in the 20-39 age group and 17% in the 60-79 age group, in the general group the growth was 18.7% (p<0, 05). The trend in the Midwest was for an increase only in the 80+ age group, with an increase of 18.4% per year. The other locations and age groups showed a stationary trend (p>0.05). Conclusion: The present study showed a high rate of dengue cases in Brazil. The temporal trend of dengue TPI was stationary in most observations, with the exception of the South and Midwest.
