Abstract

Objective: to conduct field research on the profile of students at a higher education institution in relation to factors that predispose to the development of acne during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a quantitative, cross-sectional study, in the city of Santarém-Pará, with academic volunteers of both genders, aged 18 to 33 years in the Instituto Esperança de Ensino Superior-IESPES, approved by the Research Ethics Committee. The research occurred virtually through Google forms in the period of May and June 2022. Results: We included 128 participants, with a greater distribution of the age range between 21 and 25 years (60.16%), and most of them were female (61.72%). With regard to acne during the pandemic, a large percentage reported that they already had acne, but there was a worsening or increase in acne in 71.88% of the participants. Regarding the type of mask manufacturing material, the most used was the surgical type followed by the fabric type. As regards the correlation between the use of the mask and the presence of inflammatory lesions (papules and nodules), most of the 50% of patients who used the tissue mask presented nodules; furthermore, the length of stay between 6 to 9 hours influenced the presence of papules. Conclusion: it was observed that there was a correlation between the time of permanence with the same mask and the type of mask with the worsening or appearance of new acnes during the pandemic period.
