Epidemiological profile of colorectal cancer cases notified in the state of Piauí, Brazil

Abstract

Cancer is considered a public health problem that affects individuals of all ages and genders, and colorectal cancer (CRC) is a neoplasm that encompasses tumors that start in the part of the large intestine called colon, rectum and anus. In Brazil, this pathology occupies the third position in incidence in the population, with 40 thousand new cases being diagnosed each year, in both sexes. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the profiles of colorectal cancer cases diagnosed in the state of Piauí. Unified Health System (DATASUS). The sample of this study included all cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed in the state of Piauí, from 2017 to 2021. Information regarding demographic data was divided, considering sex and age group, while information regarding the disease was organized according to the therapeutic modality and staging at the time of diagnosis. In view of this study, a high prevalence of colorectal cancer was observed in the studied period, especially in the age group between 50 and 70 years. It was possible to observe that chemotherapy and radiotherapy were the most used treatments. In addition, most diagnoses were made in more advanced stages of the disease.
