The evolution of the population coverage of oral health teams in the Southern states of Brazil

This study analyzed the evolution of population coverage by Oral Health Teams (OHT) integrated into the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the states of the Southern region of Brazil, between January 2020 and July 2024. This is an ecological study, based on secondary data obtained from the e-Gestor Primary Care platform, which were subsequently organized and processed to calculate the annual average coverage for the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The results indicated a 22.33% increase in the number of teams and growth in population coverage, which rose from 37.18% in 2020 to 42.13% in 2024. Despite these advances, heterogeneity was observed among the states, with Santa Catarina showing the highest percentages and Rio Grande do Sul the lowest. Furthermore, an oscillation in the indices was noted in 2024, suggesting the need for policies that ensure greater stability. It is concluded that the Southern region demonstrated relevant progress, yet remains distant from the universalization of access, making it essential to strengthen strategies that reduce intra-regional inequalities and expand equity in oral health.
