Efficacy of teeth whitening in patients of different age groups

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of tooth whitening in patients of various age groups, considering possible variations in clinical results due to structural changes in dental tissue throughout aging. Methodology: This is an indirect documentary research study of third-party articles, in a qualitative study with little systematization of literature, carried out in the PubMed, SciELO and BVS databases, encompassing publications from 2005-2025 that compared the whitening response in young, adult and elderly individuals. Results and discussion: The analysis demonstrated that age can interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment, since modifications such as thickening of secondary dentin, enamel thickness and lower dentin permeability hinder the diffusion of whitening agents in older teeth. Clinical studies showed that younger patients (15-25 years) presented greater color variation and a faster response to treatment, while adults and the elderly obtained satisfactory results, but with a lower whitening rate. Despite these differences, the literature has confirmed that teeth whitening, whether done at home or in the office, is a safe and effective procedure for all age groups, provided it is performed under professional supervision. Conclusion: Age can influence the effectiveness of teeth whitening, without compromising the achievement of satisfactory aesthetic results.
