The role of physical therapy in the rehabilitation of post-stroke patients: a literature review

Stroke is a severe neurological condition and one of the leading causes of global morbidity and mortality. This review article explores the pathophysiology of stroke, its risk factors, clinical manifestations, and rehabilitation strategies, with a focus on the role of physical therapy. Early diagnosis, the identification of risk factors like arterial hypertension and a sedentary lifestyle, and a multidisciplinary treatment approach are essential for the patient's prognosis. The main alterations resulting from stroke, such as motor deficits (hemiparesis and spasticity), sensory, visual, and cognitive impairments, are discussed in detail. Physical therapy, as a pillar of rehabilitation, acts in the acute, subacute, and chronic phases, using techniques such as early mobilization, balance training, and hydrotherapy to promote neuroplasticity, restore function, and improve quality of life. The objective of this work is to discuss the importance of physical therapy for the recovery of functionality and autonomy in post-stroke patients.
