Smoking is considered a health hazard around the world, with high mortality rates and, above all, harmful consequences that manifest themselves years later. With the potential advances in the use of saliva, as it is a non-invasive, safe, and cheaper collection method for identifying the diagnosis of lesions caused by smoking through proteomic biomarkers, it is being considered a great attractive and useful tool for tests aimed at early results and reflecting the health of the human body. The article presents a qualitative literature review, with little structure and of the specific type of narrative literature review, addressing smoking and saliva, with the aim of detailing the descriptions of each marker that uses the human saliva proteome, showing with data the evidence of their effectiveness and results, also focusing on describing their advantages for use, in addition to discussing some challenges of research in this field.
