Differences in speech therapy practice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and in rooming-in

Introduction: Speech therapy in the neonatal hospital environment differs according to the care context of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Rooming-in, through intervention with the mother-baby dyad. In the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, interventions focus on assessing oral functions, ensuring a safe transition from alternative feeding to oral feeding, and providing early stimulation to at-risk newborns. In Rooming-In, educational, preventive, and breastfeeding encouragement actions predominate, with an emphasis on family guidance. The objective of this study is to analyze the differences in speech therapy practice in the care of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Rooming-In, focusing on techniques related to speech therapy. Methods: Integrative review of four databases, where studies published between 2020 and 2025 were read and analyzed, using the descriptors (*Speech-Language Pathology*) and (*Maternity*) and (*Newborn*) in Portuguese, (*Speech-Language Pathology*) and (*Hospitals, Maternity*) and (*Infant, Newborn*) in English. The descriptors (*Speech-Language Pathology*) and (*Infant, Newborn*) in English were also used. Results: Of the twelve articles, eight focused on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, three covered both the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Rooming-in, and one dealt exclusively with Rooming-in. Conclusion: This study analyzed that neonatal speech therapy presented significant differences between the two units, revealing the speech therapy care objectives that each environment demands.
