Impacto de la sarcopenia en el anciano y la importancia de la educación alimentaria y nutricional

Resumen

Introducción: La sarcopenia es una enfermedad caracterizada por la pérdida progresiva de masa muscular y fuerza. Cuando se asocia con el envejecimiento, se asocia a un mayor riesgo de caídas, hospitalización y mortalidad. Objetivo: El objetivo general de este artículo es: analizar los impactos de la educación alimentaria y nutricional en la prevención y tratamiento de la sarcopenia en el adulto mayor. Metodología: Este estudio se realizó mediante una revisión bibliográfica. Se seleccionaron documentos científicos, incluyendo trabajos publicados en los últimos 10 años (entre 2015 y 2025) en portugués e inglés. Las bases de datos utilizadas fueron PubMed y SciELO. Discusión: Los estudios indican que la educación nutricional, combinada con una ingesta proteica adecuada (≥1,2 g/kg/día), se convierte en una herramienta eficaz en la prevención y el tratamiento de la sarcopenia. Datos que refuerzan su importancia como intervención prioritaria y esencial debido al envejecimiento poblacional. Además, la incorporación de la ENA en las políticas públicas y los servicios de salud puede desempeñar un papel fundamental en la promoción del envejecimiento saludable. Consideraciones finales: La sarcopenia, reconocida por la CIE-10 (M62.84), constituye uno de los mayores desafíos de salud pública, dado su impacto en la autonomía y la calidad de vida de las personas mayores. El envejecimiento poblacional, sumado a los malos hábitos alimentarios, aumenta la relevancia de las estrategias preventivas. En este contexto, la Educación Alimentaria y Nutricional (EAN) emerge como una herramienta fundamental, capaz de promover opciones alimentarias saludables, preservar la funcionalidad y reducir los impactos psicosociales.
